SBIC News > IVANO BERTINI 1940-2012

June 2, 2012
Ivano Bertini passed away Saturday evening, 7 July, 2012. Ivano has been a giant in the field of bioinorganic chemistry since the field began. He was one of the founders of SBIC, the first Editor of JBIC, and the organizer of the first ICBIC meeting, which was held in Florence, Italy in June of 1983. In August of 2001 he was the organizer of the 10th ICBIC meeting, also held in Florence. More recently, Ivano had been very happy to learn that he had been selected as an Honorary Member of SBIC.

In addition, Ivano Bertini has simultaneously been a giant in the field of NMR spectroscopy and he and his colleagues have made a number of important advances in protein NMR spectroscopy, in particular of paramagnetic metalloproteins, as well as many other types of proteins. For many years he and his colleagues have organized a series of important magnetic resonance workshops in the Tuscan hills called the Chianti Workshops on Magnetic Relaxation, the most recent of which was held in June, 2012. Prof. Bertini and his colleagues were also organizers of the Joint EUROMAR 2010 and 17th ISMAR Conference in Florence in July, 2010, which was attended by NMR and EPR spectroscopists from around the world.
